Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Lock and Talk

Lock Meds. Lock Guns. Talk Safety.

When someone is in crisis and lethal means are available and accessible in the home they are more likely to die by suicide. The Lock and Talk initiative strives to make communities safer from suicide by encouraging you to make guns and medications less accessible to anyone who should not have them.

REVIVE!

Since 2013, fatal drug overdose has been the leading method of unnatural death in Virginia, surpassing
all other forms of unnatural death including homicide, suicide, motor vehicles accidents, and
undetermined deaths.

REVIVE! is the Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education (OONE) program for the Commonwealth of
Virginia.

REVIVE! provides training on how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose emergency
using naloxone.

Medication Disposal

Unsecured medications in the home can pose a danger to children, the elderly, and those at risk for
substance misuse. Expired and discontinued prescriptions should be disposed of properly so that they
do not cause environmental harm.

GPCS provides Deterra medication disposal kits that can be used at
home. Secure dropboxes are available at multiple locations in the community: Powhatan Sheriff’s
Office, Goochland Sheriff’s Office, and Goochland Pharmacy.

These dropboxes accept both prescription and over the counter medications.

ACEs Workshop

Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17
years). Studies show that 26% of adults have at least one ACE, while 1 in 8 adults have 4 or more ACEs.
This trauma increases the likelihood of developing chronic diseases and some cancers.

ACE trainers across Virginia are working to raise awareness through education and to connect people to resources in an effort to reduce ACEs and improve our communities. Goochland Powhatan Community Services delivers these trainings in collaboration with other agencies.
